Random Recollections

  • We missed getting into Windsor Castle early in the trip. However, it looked so interesting that we made a special effort to tour it before leaving for home.
  • Windsor Castle is the stereotype of a royal castle. Over 900 years old, it sits atop a hill, and its walls are massive and impenetrable. It has all of the towers, turrets, bastions, and fortifications you would expect for the premier castle in England. It is the largest occupied castle in the world.
  • Rather than repeat the descriptions so readily available elsewhere, I have opted to link to other sites (or just Google "Windsor Castle" for more info):
  • Many famous English men and women (including most of the Kings and Queens of England since the War of the Roses) are buried in St. George's Chapel within the grounds of the castle and the chapel is the home of the Order of the Garter, among the earliest of the chivalric orders founded during the Middle Ages.
  • We very much enjoyed the famous Queen Mary's Dolls' House and the incredible art treasures from the Royal Collection.
  • We found our tour of the castle and the city of Windsor more than worth the return trip!
