Dover - 2002

  • We made a quick one-day trip to Dover. We saw the white cliffs, looked across the English Channel, walked through the World War II tunnels, and toured the old castle. Everything was extremely interesting for history buffs like Melissa and me.
  • One of the most interesting things we saw was the Bronze Age boat which had been discovered in downtown Dover during an excavation for a construction project. It was in the Dover City Museum and the British Museum had provided a vacuum enclosure to protect it from deterioration. They had also built replicas (both small and large) to clearly show the construction and possible configurations (they're not sure how it originally looked since only part of it was recovered).
  • We tried to swing back to Groombridge Place which had been purchased and rebuilt by John and Philip Packer, respectively, but it was closed for the season when we arrived. You can find more information at: http://www.groombridge.co.uk/his_time.htm
